MS Dhoni Shares IPL 2027 Availability Update, Says ‘Before December’

MS Dhoni, the former Indian captain, has declared that he will determine whether to participate in the 2027 Indian Premier League for the Chennai Super Kings prior to December 2026. The 45-year-old made the declaration at a healthcare event in Bengaluru on October 24, 2026, which garnered a significant amount of attention from cricket fans worldwide.

According to MS Dhoni, who was ineligible for the entirety of the 2026 IPL season as a result of a calf injury and fitness concerns, medical tests would be the determining factor.

Furthermore, Kasi Viswanathan, the CEO of CSK, has acknowledged that MS Dhoni is the sole decision-maker. “Doc, I will be required to undergo the examination.”

“You will be required to provide me with the report, and then before December, I will evaluate my capacity to potentially participate in one more season,” MS Dhoni was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

“And if I am not, you will need to ensure that you are properly handling me and that this old vintage vehicle is functioning properly on the road.” Therefore, they are the ones who are under the most pressure,” he concluded.

What is the reason for the uncertainty surrounding MS Dhoni’s availability for the 2027 Indian Premier League?

MS Dhoni’s participation in the IPL 2027 is uncertain due to a fitness setback that prevented him from playing the entire 2026 season. The physical demands of another IPL season at the age of 45 prompted concerns regarding his capacity to manage them, as he was unable to play due to a calf injury.

It was clear from his comments at the Bengaluru healthcare event that he is deeply concerned about the matter and will make his decision based on medical evaluations rather than his emotions.

The question is given greater significance by the broader context. Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020 after playing his final match for India in the World Cup quarterfinal in November 2019. CSK was able to retain him as an uncapped player prior to the 2025 IPL

season as a result of his retirement. In the 2025 Indian Premier League, he batted as a finisher in the late position of the order. Nevertheless, he was unable to participate in the 2026 season as a result of CSK’s failure to qualify for the playoffs.

The Chennai Super Kings are the second most successful team in the annals of the IPL, having won five trophies. In 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023, MS Dhoni steered the team to each of the victories. MS Dhoni temporarily relinquished his captaincy in the middle of the campaign following the 2022 season.

He reclaimed it when CSK faced a difficult stretch that led to their first-ever failure to qualify for the playoffs. Ruturaj Gaikwad assumed the captaincy after he resigned following his 2023 championship victory. CSK has not advanced beyond the group stage since the transition.

Dhoni would resume his career if he passes his medical examinations and elects to participate in the 2027 Indian Premier League, following an entire season of absence. The team and its supporters will closely monitor any developments until December 2026, when Dhoni himself has set a deadline for his decision.
