Simmons Dismisses Reports of Chaos in Bangladesh Camp Before West Indies Tests
Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has flatly denied allegations of chaos inside the team’s setup following the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s decision to remove Mohammad Ashraful from his post as batting coach in the week leading up to the two-Test home series against West Indies. The BCB said on Saturday that Ashraful had been reassigned and that Mohammad Salahuddin will take over as batting coach on a temporary basis.
The coaching shift occurred against the backdrop of Bangladesh’s mixed results in the UAE earlier in October 2026. The team drew the one-off Test against Afghanistan before going winless in the ODI tri-series, losing both to Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.
Many commentators attributed Ashraful’s departure to those performances, considering it as a reactive decision by the board. There are also suggestions that the BCB is close to appointing a permanent batting coach ahead of the forthcoming tour of South Africa, albeit the name and timetable of that appointment are unknown. When asked about the circumstances before to the series, Simmons was direct.
What does the West Indies series mean for Bangladesh’s World Cup ambitions?
Bangladesh is now fourth in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 standings, with a point percentage of 55.56, and Simmons has emphasized the importance of the team’s two-match home series against the West Indies in reaching the WTC final for the first time.
The first test begins on October 28 at Mirpur, after the squad had spent several days in intensive training. Simmons compared the group’s concentration during the buildup to the mood before the drew Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.
Bangladesh also won a historic Test in Darwin, Australia, in September 2026, which boosted the team’s confidence ahead of their home match.
How did Simmons defend Bangladesh’s batting during the Afghanistan Test?
The drew Test against Afghanistan sparked widespread criticism, with some questioning if Bangladesh’s batters were assertive enough in pressing for a win. Simmons denied that portrayal, claiming that the players obeyed team management’s orders and that the outcome was influenced by field conditions and missed opportunities rather than a lack of desire.

Simmons was also happy to be a part of the West Indies’ repeated Bangladesh visits. He was the West Indies’ head coach when they won the Test series 2-0 in 2021, which included Kyle Mayers’ unbeaten 210 in a fourth-innings chase at Chattogram. He expressed his desire to be on the winning side again, this time in the Bangladesh dugout.
