Temba Bavuma Says Winning WTC Final Matters More Than Test Rankings
Ahead of the last match, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma was asked whether he would rather finish as the world’s top-ranked Test side or win another World Cup. When asked to choose between reaching the top of the Test rankings and raising the WTC mace for the second time, the Proteas captain made it obvious that he preferred another championship success over individual rankings.
South Africa and Australia are tied 1-1 in their three-match Test series, with the decider scheduled for Newlands in Cape Town. Australia won the first Test by 214 runs in Durban, but the Proteas reacted emphatically in Gqeberha, defeating the Australians by an innings and 31 runs to tie the series. Both sides are in contention for the World Test Championship, so the final match is important for their individual goals.
Why does Bavuma value the WTC title over Test rankings?
Bavuma explained why the experience of winning a championship final is more valuable than rankings alone. According to Bavuma, the occasion, the pressure, and the opportunity to play on the biggest stage make it especially noteworthy. He noted that a World Test Championship final possesses an intrinsic dimension that goes beyond statistics rankings.

South Africa is the reigning WTC champions, having defeated Australia in the 2025 Final. A victory in the series decider in Cape Town would propel South Africa to the top of the Test standings while also keeping their hopes for another WTC title alive. Bavuma has won 12 of his 14 Tests as captain, for an amazing 85.71 percent win percentage.
