Zaheer Khan to Meet MS Dhoni as CSK Prepare to Finalise Player Retentions

Zaheer Khan, the newly hired head coach of the Chennai Super Kings, has his first formal meeting with the team management on Monday in Chennai. The major topic of discussion was finalizing his support workers for the upcoming IPL cycle.

Zaheer Khan is now slated to visit Mumbai in the coming days to chat with MS Dhoni before returning to Chennai to do a preliminary assessment of the playing group. Prior to the November 15 deadline, these conversations will have a direct impact on CSK’s retention decisions.

CSK is arguing for a full overhaul of the entire structure after cutting links with a large number of Stephen Fleming’s support workers over the years. Significant changes are planned, including the release of many players to allow the team to enter the mini-auction with a sizable auction purse, following the team’s failure to qualify for the playoffs last season.

Who will join Zaheer Khan’s CSK support team?

Albie Morkel, a member of the team during its trophy-winning years and current head coach of the Johannesburg Super Kings, is reportedly expected to join the squad, along with former England batter Gareth Batty. The new cycle’s bowling coach has been appointed Mohit Sharma.

Although Eric Simons, Rajiv Kumar, and batting coach Michael Hussey, all part of Fleming’s coaching team, have left CSK, not all former employees have been sacked. James Foster, who joined the five-time winners as fielding coach in 2026 after serving as Stephen Fleming’s assistant on England’s Test team, will continue in that position.

Foster retains his spot because his other commitments do not coincide with the IPL window. In a similar vein, Sridharan Sriram will remain a member of the setup; new posts for both are expected to be created later. After the franchise’s trials in preparation for the mini-auction next month, a formal announcement involving the full support staff is expected.

What sectors of the mini-auction is CSK focusing on?

CSK is eager to improve their international playing roster. Each player on the team is expected to be capable of winning games on their own, and the team has traditionally relied heavily on an international contingent. However, throughout the last few seasons, that area has not performed to the required standards.

The quality of international players in the pool at the moment will determine if CSK can close that gap via the mini-auction. The amount of the auction money that the franchise may employ for that process will be determined by Zaheer Khan and Dhoni’s retention decisions before the November 15 deadline.
